Rick Steves' Best of Eastern Europe - Days 6, 7, 8 and 9
Eger
Today we hopped on the bus for our drive to Hungary. After arriving in Eger, we took an orientation walk and headed to a traditional Hungarian meal. We really enjoyed the charm of this smaller town and its peaceful square. We had a relaxing morning touring Eger on our own before we we headed to our next stop.
On the way to Budapest, we stopped at a winery. There we sat in a sunroom while we listened to a gypsy playing the violin and we tasted and learned about Hungarian wines. We also learned a song and some dance steps!
Budapest
After our tour of the winery, we had a scenic trip to Budapest. After we checked into our hotel, George took us on an orientation walk on the way to dinner. He gave us passes for the public transportation and showed us how to use them. It was so convenient to get around this large city.
The next morning we toured the Pest side of the city. Budapest is full of history and incredible architecture. The parliament building was a particular standout.
Warning! Be very careful in Budapest or you will find you have thousands of photographs you have to sort through when you get home! :-)
After the morning tour was over, Greg and I went to the top of St. Stephen’s Basilica and toured the small museum inside. This was 360 degrees of awe-inspiring views!
Wow moment!
In the evening, we all got back together for an evening cruise on the Danube. It was an amazing way to end the day!
The next day we toured the Buda side. It was a day for royal castles and the beautiful Matthias Church. The details in every part of this church are incredible. After our morning tour was over, Greg and I crossed back into Pest. We headed to the market to eat and explore. Many of our tour mates took this time to head to the thermal baths.
